The KDI was founded in 1971 as a think tank that researches economic policy issues concerning Korea in both systematic and applicable ways, and assists the government in formulating the "Five-year Economic Development Plans" and related policies.

The KDI School is an international graduate school offering Master’s and PhD programs in two specialized areas - Public Policy and Development Policy. Since its foundation in 1997, the KDI School has recruited more than 53% of the student body from over 100 different countries. More than 95% of the international students receive full scholarship including tuition and monthly stipend (a round-trip airfare depending on the scholarship). The KDI School blends their wealth of expertise and experiences to provide a curriculum that optimizes academic theory and real world relevance.
