DIPLOMATIC ACADEMY OF VIET NAM CO-HOSTS A JOINT PANEL WITH TSINGHUA UNIVERSITY AT THE 2026 WORLD PEACE FORUM

From 2 to 4 July 2026, a delegation from the Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam (DAV), led by President Nguyen Hung Son, participated in the 14th World Peace Forum (WPF) in Beijing, China. As part of the Forum, DAV co-hosted a joint panel on “Viet Nam - China Relations and Regional Security” with the Institute of International Relations, Tsinghua University (TUIIR), and participated in a number of other official activities.

The World Peace Forum (WPF) is a leading track 1.5 forum on international security, jointly initiated by Tsinghua University and the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs (CPIFA) in 2012 and held annually since 2013. The 14th World Peace Forum (WPF 14) officially opened on 3 July 2026 at Tsinghua University under the theme “Global Governance and International Security Cooperation: Integrity, Innovation, and Inclusiveness.” The Forum featured one high-level session, four plenary sessions, and 19 panel discussions, bringing together more than 400 participants, including incumbent and former political leaders, scholars, experts, and policymakers from over 80 countries. Han Zheng, Vice President of the People's Republic of China, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a keynote address.

Vice President Han Zheng emphasized the need to strengthen multilateral cooperation in responding to global security and governance challenges amid growing uncertainty and profound changes in the international landscape.

The Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam (DAV) delegation to WPF 14 comprised Dr. Nguyen Hung Son, President of  DAV (Head of Delegation); Ambassador Ho Xuan Son, Former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Senior Advisor to the DAV; and Ms. Bui Phuong Mai, Researcher, Viet Nam Institute for Strategic and International Studies (VISIS). Notably, this marked the first time that Tsinghua University had invited the Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam to co-host a panel discussion entitled “Viet Nam - China Relations and Regional Security” as part of the World Peace Forum. The event was particularly significant as it took place just three months after General Secretary To Lam delivered a keynote address on Viet Nam - China relations to young people from both countries at Tsinghua University during his state visit to China in April 2026.

Dr. Nguyen Hung Son, President of the Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam, noted that this was the only panel at this year's World Peace Forum dedicated to China's relations with an ASEAN country and reaffirmed that Viet Nam always considers developing relations with China a strategic choice and a top priority in its foreign policy.
Professor Yan Xuetong, Secretary-General of the World Peace Forum and Honorary Dean of the Institute of International Relations at Tsinghua University, emphasized that a stable Viet Nam - China relationship would bring substantial benefits to both countries and become a strategic asset for their shared development.

Beyond co-hosting the joint panel discussion, WPF 14 also marked the first time that the Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam (DAV) was invited to take part in multiple official activities throughout the Forum. These included delivering remarks at the Lunch Dialogue on “Can Asia Become the Center of the World?” and holding a meeting with Professor Yan Xuetong, Secretary-General of the World Peace Forum and Honorary Dean of the Institute of International Relations at Tsinghua University.

Ambassador Ho Xuan Son, former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Senior Advisor to the Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam, spoke at the Lunch Dialogue on “Can Asia Become the Center of the World?”

The Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam's participation in the 14th World Peace Forum (WPF 14) concluded successfully. The visit reaffirmed the presence, reputation, and contributions of Viet Nam in general, and the Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam (DAV) in particular, at one of the region's leading track 1.5 dialogue platforms on peace and international security. The outcomes of the visit not only helped deepen academic cooperation between  the Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam (DAV)  and Tsinghua University, but also provided a valuable opportunity for substantive exchanges between scholars and policymakers from the two countries. These discussions generated ideas and policy recommendations that could contribute to promoting a more stable, substantive, and comprehensive Viet Nam - China relationship.
