

On March 19, 2019, at Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam, post-graduate Ly Thi Hai Yen successfully defended her Academy-level Doctoral Thesis, majoring in International Relations, code no. 9.31.02.6 at Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam. The thesis, titled "Impacts of the media on international relations during the first years of the 21st century (The case of the Internet and global news channels)", was completed under the scientific guidance of Assoc. Prof Do Son Hai.

The Committee highly valued the contributions of the thesis. This thesis will be the first structured research in Viet Nam on the impacts of the media on International Politics in the early years of the 21st century. The thesis presented an overview of the media and International Politics in the first years of the 21st century, a theoretical framework related to the fields of media and International Politics, as well as the aspects of the media that affect International Politics. The research results have shown that the media impact politics on all three levels: international system, state and individual - three basic levels in International Politics. The specific impacts at each level are: Impacting the global audience, forming global agendas, creating cohesiveness but also deeper rifts in International Politics (international system level); Enhancing national soft power, promoting democratic movements, and impacting foreign policies as well as diplomatic activities (state level). At the individual level, the media influence the international relations observation and research activities of national leaders, thus impacting the current situation of International Politics. Based on the analyses, the thesis predicted the impacts of the media on International Politics in the next ten years and proposed recommended lessons for Viet Nam. The thesis was sophisticated and reliable research, which can be used as referential, research, and educational materials in Communications, International Communications, International Politics, and referential materials for those who are concerned.

The defense ceremony occurred in all seriousness and followed the regulations on doctoral training. The post-graduate presented the main research results of the thesis and answered all the Committee's questions. The Committee concluded that post-graduate Ly Thi Hai Yen deserved to receive the title of International Relations Doctor with 7/7 "Pass" votes, including 4/7 "Excellent" votes.
