

On September 5th, 2020, at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, postgraduate Bui Nguyen Bao successfully defended his doctoral dissertation at the Academy level, which is specialized in International Relations, coded 9.31.02.06 with the topic “U.S. - Republic of Korea (ROK) Alliance Relationship from 2008 to present: Interpretation in the perspective of neo-realism”, under Professor. Doctor. Nguyen Thai Yen Huong’s scientific guidance.

The Council deeply appreciated the dissertation’ contributions to science and reality. This is a systematic scientific research work from a Vietnamese researcher’s perspective on the US - ROK Alliance Relationship from 2008 to present under the perspective of neo-realism.
The dissertation has systematically synthesized the basic arguments of Neo-realism, focusing on the theory of alliance relations, international environment, national interests and the focus is on how to systematically approach (emphasizing the impact of power distribution structures on international relations and national foreign policy). On that basis, the dissertation builds an analytical framework including the systematic and sub-system levels (national and individual levels) to survey the U.S.- ROK alliance relationship over the two periods of 2008- 2017 and 2017-2019 in terms of politics- security, economy. By explaining the movement of this relationship in a neo-Realism’s the perspective, the dissertation gives general assessments of the U.S. - ROK alliance relationship during the research period, and at the same time forecast the trend of the U.S.- ROK alliance to 2030 on the basis of assessing the movement tendencies of factors at the systemic and sub-system levels.

The doctoral defense ceremony took place in a serious scientific atmosphere and in accordance with the regulations on doctoral training. The postgraduate presented the main research results of the dissertation and thoroughly answered the questions of the Council. The Council concluded that postgraduate Bui Nguyen Bao deserved the doctorate in International Relations with 7/7 votes.
