Roundtable with Germany’s Ministry of Defense on Regional Security

On March 6, 2024, the German Ministry of Defense delegation paid a visit to the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam. The two sides held a discussion on the issues of common concerns related to regional and global security.

The meeting was chaired by Dr. Pham Lan Dung, Acting Director of the DAV, and attended by Dr. Do Thanh Hai, Assistant Director General, East Sea Institute, and Dr. Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, Assistant Director General, Institute of Foreign Policy and Strategic Studies, as well as researchers and lecturers of the DAV.

The German Ministry of Defense delegation included Colonel Holger Leukert, Head of the Department, and Dr. Oliver Bange, Desk Officer for Vietnam at the Department II 2, General Department of National Defense and Security Policy. The German Embassy in Hanoi was represented by Lieutenant Colonel Mark Gottschalk, Defense Attaché. 

The participants shared analyses and assessments on various global and regional security matters, encompassing recent developments in the East Sea, crises in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, and the functioning of ASEAN and other regional security organization, as well as the foreign and defense policies of Germany and Vietnam in the uncertain and volatile security environment.

At the end of the meeting, Colonel Leukert, on behalf of the German Ministry of Defense, thanked the DAV for receiving the Delegation and hosting the stimulating roundtable,  expressing his desire to maintain exchange in the future.
