Russia - Ukraine Tensions: Nature, Causes, and Prospects

On February 24, 2022, the TASS News Agency (Russia) reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Russia was launching a "special military operation" in Eastern Ukraine in response to the request for security assistance from the leaders of the two self-proclaimed Republics, Donetsk (DPR) and Luhansk (LPR).

In the context of escalating tensions among Russia, the United States, and member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the public is greatly interested in several questions: What is the nature of this conflict, why did it occur at this particular time, and what is the trajectory of this crisis?
