Scientific talk: “Assessing the current situation and directions to promote international cooperation on fisheries and fishermen in East Sea”

On September 29th, 2020, at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, Dr. Nguyen Hung Son - Deputy Director of the Academy chaired a talk “Assessing the current situation and directions to promote international cooperation on fisheries and fishermen in East Sea”. The talk was attended by more than 30 representatives of the offices relating to the activities of fishermen, fisheries, and experts on East Sea and sea security.

The delegates shared information about the challenges to the security and safety of Vietnamese fishermen at sea today; affirmed that fishermen were facing a lot of traditional challenges such as severe weather, difficult working conditions, risk of piracy... In addition, fishermen also met the emerging challenges such as a decrease in natural fish stocks and an increase in regional fishing power making the dispute more fierce on fishing grounds.

At the talk, delegates gave the legal basis and international practice on the humanitarian treatment of fishermen, therefore, came up with remarkable recommendations to promote international cooperation on fisheries and protection. fishermen in the future./.
