On the afternoon of November 6, the Faculty of International Politics and Diplomacy at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam organized the Workshop on “International publishing: Skills and practical experience.” The event was chaired by Dr. Ha Anh Tuan, Acting Dean of the Faculty, with guest speakers Dr. Kuik Cheng-Chwee (National University of Malaysia) and Dr. Lam Peng Er (National University of Singapore), both are editors and authors with extensive publications in Scopus/ISI-indexed journals. The seminar attracted a large number of young researchers and students interested in academic writing and international publication.

During the discussion, the specialists offered detailed insights into the submission process for international journals, how to develop a high-quality research article, and key considerations from an editor’s and reviewer’s perspective. Dr. Lam Peng Er emphasized the importance of choosing the right publication outlet and understanding the characteristics of different formats—think-tank reports, media articles, or academic journals. Each serves a distinct audience and requires a different writing approach, he noted, urging authors to be realistic when selecting where to submit. He stressed that rejection is a normal part of the academic journey; instead of being discouraged, researchers should proactively explore other reputable journals and publishers. The essential principle is ensuring that the manuscript aligns with the journal’s scope, themes, and methodological expectations.

From a practical standpoint, Dr. Kuik Cheng-Chwee highlighted three core components of a strong academic article: substance, structure, and style. He emphasized the need for authors to clearly define their topic and research question, articulate a concise thesis statement that guides the entire paper. A well-organised structure, coherent layering of ideas, and an engaging introduction are crucial. He also underlined the importance of a clear and compelling writing style that uses vivid examples and logical, persuasive arguments.

Concluding the seminar, both experts underscored that successful research requires consistent writing practice, openness to reviewer feedback, and perseverance in refining one’s academic skills. The session provided young scholars and students with practical, valuable insights into the path toward successful academic publishing.
