On October 26, 2021, 6 students representing the Faculty of International Communication and Culture attended Professor Chris Matthews’ course on U.S. Politics and Media at Fulbright University Vietnam.

The course, titled “America’s Big Divide”, ran for five sessions from October 26 to November 5, 2021. Topics covered included COVID Politics, U.S.–Afghanistan Policy, Political Polarization in the United States, Deep Divides in U.S. Media, and the Outlook for the 2022 Midterm Elections. Several sessions also featured the participation of students from the American University of Afghanistan.

Students from the FICC at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam joined Fulbright University Vietnam students in attending the class via an online platform.

Each class consisted of a discussion between Professor Matthews and guest speakers, providing an overview of the topic, followed by a Q&A session with students.

In the October 26 session on COVID Politics, students had the opportunity to hear from and engage with seasoned speakers such as Joy Reid, political analyst for MSNBC; Heidi Przybyla, journalist and reporter for NBC News; and Ron Reagan, journalist, host, and political commentator for MSNBC and Air America Radio. Through in-depth analysis by Professor Matthews and the guest speakers, students gained insight into the political and media dynamics behind debates over mask and vaccine mandates in the United States.

The course offered students valuable expertise in politics and media while broadening their understanding of national and international issues.
