Nguyễn Diễm Quỳnh - To Shine without Perfection

Nguyễn Diễm Quỳnh – an alumna of Cohort 47, International Relations, at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam (DAV) – did not choose a smooth, predetermined path. She moved forward slowly but deliberately, daring to try, daring to make mistakes, and growing through every experience – in academics, in work, and in her journey of self-discovery. Her story proves a simple truth: you don’t need to be perfect; you just need the courage to begin – and you can shine in your own way.

Choosing a Different Path

In an age where “studying the right major, working the right job” is often seen as the standard roadmap to success, Quỳnh set out on a different course. She had originally planned to study abroad. But when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, all her plans changed – and DAV appeared as an unexpected choice. “To be honest, I didn’t really choose it – life pushed me here. Like many who studied French, I wanted to go abroad, but then the pandemic hit, and I had to set that dream aside.”

What mattered, however, was not the randomness of that choice, but the way she patiently created meaning from the unforeseen. Instead of chasing rigid standards, Quỳnh observed and listened. Rather than lamenting the gap between expectation and reality, she chose to adapt. Step by step, she built a solid foundation of thought that gave her confidence in every decision ahead – from studies to career.

Today, Quỳnh works in tourism for the French market – a career not strictly aligned with her academic major, but one that reflects her adaptability and ability to apply lessons learned at DAV. For her, education was never about following a set roadmap but about discovering who she could become.

Courage without Commotion

If academic training quietly shaped her mindset, extracurricular activities gave her the stage to demonstrate energy, initiative, and creativity. Among these, Miss DAV 2023 was a turning point – a space where she could express herself fully, from intellect and confidence to communication and artistry. Joining the Academy’s largest pageant was not about proving anything, but about her love of art, her eagerness to learn, and her desire to meet new versions of herself. For Quỳnh, Miss DAV was not a summit to conquer but a stepping stone of self-growth. “At first, I was so hesitant. I doubted myself because I wasn’t as outspoken or as striking as others. But then I thought: if I never try, I’ll never know where my limits really lie.”

The experience gave her more than confidence; it reframed her view of courage. She discovered that quietness and gentleness can coexist with resilience and bravery. One does not need to be the loudest or most dazzling – it is enough to be genuine, to live truthfully, and to step into the light with sincerity. “I think everyone should try, at least once, to step outside the image they’ve built of themselves. Only then do we really meet ourselves again – the version that is unafraid of imperfection.”

Pride in community

Looking back on her four years at DAV, what Quỳnh treasures most is not only the knowledge gained but the friends who walked alongside her. For her, true academic progress came not from solitary effort but from a team “on the same wavelength,” pushing one another forward. “You need a good team. There were times when I lost motivation, and they were the ones who lifted me up.” These bonds were more than a study strategy – they became a way of living, where each person had to keep growing to keep walking together.

When asked what makes her proudest as a DAV student, she smiles: not just the high-quality environment, the experienced professors, or the strong results at graduation. What touched her most was being invited back to campus – trusted by the Office of Student Affairs to share her story with younger cohorts. For her, that moment felt like a gift: gentle, unexpected, and worthy – the culmination of four years of study and growth.

Diễm Quỳnh does not embody “perfection” in the conventional sense. Instead, she represents the young people who choose to move slower, but stronger. She makes her mark through a spirit of purposeful living, honest work, and lifelong learning. To the next generation, her message is simple: “Just try. Make mistakes, learn, then try again. Only you can find the path that is truly yours.”

Her story is a gentle yet powerful reminder: the “right” choice is not always about how well-prepared we are, but about how we face life’s unexpected turns. Courage is not only about bold leaps into the extraordinary; sometimes, it is simply the decision to stop hiding – to step out of the comfort zone, to show oneself, and to embrace challenges with an open spirit. Such journeys may not begin in fanfare, but in their quiet persistence, they shape resilient, authentic versions of ourselves. For Diễm Quỳnh, that is how she continues to shine – not perfectly, but brilliantly, in her own way.
