Seminar on “Republic of Korea-Vietnam: Deepening the strategic cooperative partnership”

On the morning of July 8th 2020, the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam cooperated with the Korean Embassy and the Korea International Exchange Fund (Korea Foundation) to hold a seminar on “Republic of Korea-Vietnam: Deepening the strategic cooperative partnership” at Daewoo Hotel, Hanoi.

The seminar took place in the context of the Korea-Vietnam relations, after 28 years of establishment, are steadily developing and expanding in many spheres, especially trade-investment, culture, tourism, people’s exchange and coordination in multilateral forums. Facing new, complex and unpredictable occurrences in the regional and world situation, the two countries meet the need for further reinforcement of the strategic cooperative partnership to better serve the interests of each party, contributing to the security and prosperity of the region.

Delegates from the two countries attending the seminar included former Vietnamese ambassadors to Korea, experts from ministries, branches, Vietnamese research institutes, representatives from the Embassy and leaders of large enterprises of Korea in Vietnam.

Addressing his opening speech, Director of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, Prof. Dr.  Nguyen Vu Tung emphasized that Vietnam considers Korea a key partner in many fields, while Korea also sees Vietnam as a crucial partner in its new Southern Policy.

In the current situation, the two sides' experts frankly exchanging and sharing their views on world and regional issues of mutual concern and the situation of each country, on the basis of which recommendations on policies and practical contributions are made to promote better and better cooperation between Vietnam and South Korea in the new period, is the right-timing and necessary.

The Korean Ambassador to Vietnam Park Noh Wan also affirmed that, in Korea’s new Southern Policy, relations with ASEAN, including Vietnam, are of high priority.

Ambassador Park Noh Wan said that this seminar was of great importance for the two sides to exchange solutions to promote partnership in the context that the world and the region are facing new challenges, especially the impact of COVID-19 and strategic competition among major countries. The two sides should further strengthen bilateral cooperation, focusing on supporting businesses, normalizing citizens exchanges and disease response.

After three sessions with a lively, practical and open exchange atmosphere, the seminar summarized the achievements of cooperation between Vietnam and Korea over the past 28 years. It also assessed opportunities and challenges for the bilateral relations in the face of new occurrences in the current regional and world situation, especially the US-China relations, regional hotspots and economic development trends under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the same time, the delegates also discussed and proposed policy recommendations in order to strengthen the Korea-Vietnam Strategic Cooperative Partnership on the bilateral channel, as well as enhance the coordination of views and actions between the two countries under the multilateral mechanisms in the future.
