Annual Dialogue between the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam (DAV) and the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA)

The Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam (DAV) and the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) jointly hosted their annual dialogue on January 30, 2024. This is the first Annual Dialogue that the DAV convened with a think-tank partner this year. The dialogue aimed to strengthen research cooperation and exchange between the two Academies and between Vietnamese and Korean scholars in general.

Amb. Dr. Pham Lan Dung, Acting President of the DAV, in her opening remarks, emphasized the reliable partnership between DAV and KNDA. She acknowledged KNDA's commendable efforts in fostering collaboration and stressed the importance of exchanging think tank’s perspectives regarding the regional landscape, contributing to peace, stability and prosperity in the region.

Dr. Park Cheol Hee, the Chancellor of KNDA, expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and highlighted the effective collaboration between the two academies. He emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation and trust between  Vietnam and the ROK in the framework of bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership.

The first session focused on the “Regional Strategic Landscape and the Role of Middle Powers.” Participants highlighted the constructive role middle powers should play in building peace, fostering dialogues in the region and collaborating on addressing non-traditional issues. Moreover, it was suggested that Vietnam and the ROK should promote sustainable development and prosperity in the Mekong sub-region.

The focus of the second session, titled “Strengthening Viet Nam - ROK and ASEAN-ROK Cooperation in the Future”, highlighted the strengthening of bilateral ties between Vietnam and the ROK. The discussion underscored collaboration on non-traditional security issues and emerging technology. Additionally, the dialogue emphasized Vietnam's role as a bridge connecting the ROK with other ASEAN nations. Being the country coordinator for ASEAN-ROK relations for 2021-2024, Vietnam was committed to collaborating with ASEAN member countries to further elevate ASEAN-ROK relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2024.

The Annual Dialogue concluded as a testament to the ongoing trust and productive collaboration between the two academies. Researchers expressed their aspirations for the comprehensive development of the Vietnam–ROK relationship, aiming to achieve tangible and long-term benefits for both nations.
