On 27 May 2026, President of the Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam (DAV), Nguyen Hung Son, held a meeting with a delegation from the Northeast Asian History Foundation (NAHF), led by Secretary-General Chung Yong Sang, to discuss prospects for research cooperation and academic exchanges between the two institutions.

Secretary-General Chung Yong Sang introduced the Foundation’s more than two decades of activities, which have primarily focused on research concerning Northeast Asian countries and regions, including the Republic of Korea, Japan, and China. The Foundation expressed its interest in expanding its research scope to Southeast Asia and strengthening cooperation with Vietnamese research institutions, particularly the East Sea Institute, in the fields of diplomatic history, maritime studies, and academic exchanges.

On behalf of DAV, representatives of the Faculty of International Politics and Diplomacy shared the DAV’s strategic direction to broaden its academic offerings in area studies, including Korean Studies and programmes related to the Asia-Pacific region. The DAV is also working closely with partners such as the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) to develop appropriate curricula and teaching methodologies. DAV expressed its aspiration to enhance cooperation with Korean institutions and research centres through student and faculty exchanges, joint conferences, and academic programme development.

In discussions with the Foundation’s delegation, representatives of the East Sea Institute highlighted the Institute’s mandate to conduct research on issues related to the East Sea, regional policies of relevant countries, as well as matters concerning international cooperation, security, and development. The Institute also serves as a policy advisory body and regularly organises thematic conferences on East Sea-related issues. The representatives highly appreciated the participation and contributions of Korean scholars in recent years and expressed their desire to expand academic linkages with international research institutions to promote scholarly exchanges and contribute to advancing Viet Nam’s positions in international forums.

Speaking at the meeting, President Nguyen Hung Son underscored that issues concerning the East Sea are closely linked to Viet Nam’s history and strategic interests, particularly from the twentieth century to the present day. He noted that Viet Nam has accumulated valuable experience in negotiating maritime boundary delimitations in overlapping maritime areas and observed that Viet Nam and the Republic of Korea share many similarities in their approaches to maritime security and territorial sovereignty issues.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides expressed their expectation of soon launching substantive cooperative activities in research, academic exchanges, and the organisation of conferences on maritime security, the international order, and regional history in the time ahead.
