Students of Faculty of International Economics Exploring Economic Cooperation in the Mekong River Basin

On April 12, 2024, at the Geneva Conference Room, Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, the Faculty of International Economics successfully organized a seminar titled “The Mechanism of Economic Cooperation in the Mekong River Basin under the framework of the 1995 Mekong Agreement and Vietnam's participation”. The seminar was led by Dr. Pham Tuan Phan, Former Chief Executive Officer of the Mekong River Commission.

Attending the seminar from the Faculty of International Economics were: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Lich, Former Dean of the Faculty of International Economics and lecturer at the Faculty of International Economics; Ambassador Tao Thi Thanh Huong, Former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Singapore and lecturer at the Faculty of International Economics; MSc. Tran Thi Thuy Linh and MSc. Nguyen Ngoc Ha, lecturers at the Faculty of International Economics, along with students from the Faculty of International Economics at Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam.

At the beginning of the seminar, Dr. Pham Tuan Phan provided an overview of the Mekong River Commission and shared his work experience at the commission, presenting a comprehensive picture of the importance of international cooperation and the role of policy managers in addressing the development challenges in the Mekong River Basin. Dr. Phan also shared his experiences, practical knowledge, and lessons learned about flexibility and adaptability in the international working environment at the commission. These experiences and lessons were not only personal perspectives but also a source of encouragement and inspiration for the students.

In addition, Dr. Pham Tuan Phan discussed the development opportunities for infrastructure and connectivity among member countries (Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam) and partners (China, Myanmar) in the basin, as well as the challenges related to institutional frameworks and governance among these mechanisms. Dr. Phan  explained that conflicting interests and diversities in regulations and policies among nations can create difficulties in achieving unified regional cooperation.

The seminar concluded with a Q&A session between the students from the Faculty of International Economics and Dr. Pham Tuan Phan, discussing the factors influencing the 2030 vision of the Mekong River Commission, the application of science and technology for sustainable development in the lower Mekong basin, and employment opportunities at the commission. At the end of the seminar, the students gathered on stage to take commemorative photos with Dr. Pham Tuan Phan and expressed their gratitude for sharing extremely valuable knowledge.
