

Within the system of international relations, there are currently many different conceptions of the term geo-economics. From a narrow perspective, geo-economics is viewed as "the use of economic tools to advance and protect national interests, and to yield favorable geo-political outcomes." From a broader perspective, geo-economics involves examining national policy through a lens that combines international economics and international security. The core issue for nations adapting to the current global geo-economic shift is finding the optimal balance between the benefits derived from international economic cooperation and geo-political and security calculations.
