The Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam received the delegation from the National Institute for Defense Studies of Japan (NIDS)

On the afternoon of July 29, 2024, the East Sea Institute, Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam organized an exchange session with the National Institute for Defense Studies of Japan (NIDS) within the framework of the delegation's working visit in Vietnam.

The exchange session was chaired by Dr. Do Thanh Hai, Deputy Director of the East Sea Institute, Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, with the participation of a number of research fellows from the East Sea Institute, Institute for Defence International Relations (IDIR) and the Embassy of Japan (EOJ). The NIDS delegation included Mr. Ilda Masafumi, Head of the Security Research Department and Mr. Ikegami Ryuzo, Head of the Military Policy Research Center, Policy Research Department. The IDIR delegation included Mr. Dang Van Hoang and Mr. Nguyen Duc Bao Chau. The EOJ representative was Colonel Ishihara Masanao, Japanese Defense Attaché in Vietnam.

At the meeting, the Japanese delegates expressed their interest in Vietnam's foreign and defense policies, exchanged views on the impact of competition between major powers on the Indo-Pacific region, and shared information on Japan's defense policy, Indo-Pacific strategy, and Japan's views on Southeast Asia and ASEAN. NIDS said that Japan had always been interested in promoting peace and stability in the region, affirming the importance of international law, including UNCLOS 1982, and said that Vietnam was an important cooperative partner for Japan.

The Vietnamese delegates shared the main contents of Viet Nam's foreign and security policies, emphasizing the goal of protecting sovereignty and territorial integrity, promoting economic development and connecting with the world, maintaining peace, stability, and promoting respect for international law in the region and the world. Dr. Do Thanh Hai expressed his interest and appreciation for Japan's role and efforts in regional security and development, affirming that there was great room for cooperation between the two countries, especially in areas such as coordinating positions and views on important regional issues, capacity building and promoting connectivity for development. 

Established in 1952, NIDS is the country's leading research and education institution dedicated to defense and security studies. Operating under the Ministry of Defense, NIDS focuses on comprehensive research and analysis of national security, defense policy and international relations, including military strategy, regional security situation and defense technology. The institute provides educational programs for officers of the Japan Self-Defense Forces and other defense-related personnel to enhance strategic thinking and analytical skills. In addition, NIDS provides policy recommendations to the Japanese government and engages in international cooperation through conferences, joint research projects, and academic exchanges. By publishing academic works, including the "NIDS Journal of Defense and Security," NIDS contributes significantly to shaping Japan's defense and security policies in a complex global environment.

The exchange took place in a frank and open atmosphere, helping to enhance mutual understanding in areas of common interest./.
