At some point in his journey to adulthood, every young person encounters moments of uncertainty, hesitation, and choice. The journey of Mr. Phạm Hải Nam—an alumnus of Cohort 44, the Faculty of International Law, and current lecturer at the Faculty of English at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam—offers a compelling story of what it means to step forward, to explore, and ultimately to find oneself along a path at once challenging and deeply meaningful. His story is not only personal; it is also a source of inspiration for those still seeking their identity and direction.
Finding His Place in the World of Diplomacy
As a child of the northern mountains and a member of an ethnic minority, Mr. Hải Nam vividly recalls the unease he felt upon first arriving in Hanoi to begin university. Such apprehension is familiar to many students far from home, suddenly immersed in a new environment often more competitive and exacting than the world they knew. Yet at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, a community characterized by openness and dialogue, he gradually gained confidence.
“The Academy changed me profoundly. What struck me most was how genuinely open people were, always willing to listen to different perspectives. Even in disagreement, we could share, debate, and find common ground. Encouraged by my peers, I became far more confident in my studies,” he recalled.
Confidence, he discovered, is rarely innate; it grows where sincerity and encouragement abound, enabling each individual to recognize both their voice and their worth.

One seemingly ordinary moment became a turning point. During a class session, Lecturer Đỗ Nguyễn Thị Thanh Lương observed that his explanation was “very easy to understand.” For a young man who had often doubted his abilities, that simple remark was transformative. “It made me realize I had a gift for conveying knowledge. Later on, I was able to use that strength to support students with very different starting points,” he shared. It was not career guidance or advice, but a small, genuine recognition—one that illuminated his potential and opened the way toward a future he had not yet imagined.

What Hải Nam takes the most pride in from his academic journey is not the accolades or positions he has attained, but the simple fact that he never gave up. He did not begin as someone naturally gifted in foreign languages, and the pressures of living far from home — surrounded by peers who seemed effortlessly dynamic and accomplished — often left him disoriented, even on the verge of giving in. Yet instead of retreating, he learned to watch, to listen, to absorb knowledge from those around him. Bit by bit, he adapted, adjusted, and eventually, doors began to open.
“As long as you believe in yourself, the Diplomatic Academy becomes the place where you can fully realize your potential,” he affirms. His story proves that perseverance and self-belief can transform pressure into propulsion, turning the ordinary into something extraordinary — and allowing each individual to shine in their own distinct way.
When Experience Becomes a Compass
From his earliest years at university, Mr. Hải Nam immersed himself in a wide range of experiences—from serving as President of the ASEAN Youth Network to leading youth initiatives at the Vietnam Red Cross. Each role became a crucible for growth. In the summer of his sophomore year, he represented Vietnam at the centennial celebration of the International Red Cross Movement in Italy. The prestige of the event was striking, but what stayed with him most was a humbling realization: his English was not yet strong enough to fully communicate his ideas. “Fluency is not the same as substance,” he reflected. “To speak well is more than pronunciation—it is the ability to deliver one’s perspectives with clarity and weight on the international stage.” Even when the pandemic disrupted opportunities, he remained active in ASEAN youth projects, making each experience part of a mosaic of growth. For him, every encounter was a valuable fragment in a larger picture—where knowledge, resilience, and humility converged.

Beyond representing Vietnam abroad, he also brought back “intangible gifts” for his community. Initially, these were tangible contributions—such as fundraising projects for local families. Over time, however, he recognized the greater value of building sustainable frameworks: initiatives that not only supported communities but also empowered young people at home to take ownership of new opportunities. In this way, each journey abroad became both an exploration and a form of planting seeds for others to grow.
From Learner to Educator
As a student, Mr. Hải Nam had never envisioned himself as a lecturer. His dream was to work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to travel, to engage with the world. Teaching, by contrast, seemed daunting—standing before dozens of students, leading discussions, guiding a class. Yet that passing comment from Lecturer Lương, together with the encouragement of peers, gradually lit a different path.
Returning to the Academy as a faculty member, he encountered new challenges—particularly, how to ensure that every student had the chance to shine. “Students at the Diplomatic Academy are like a vivid mosaic,” he noted. “Each has unique strengths, distinct personalities, sometimes even sharp contrasts. A lecturer cannot be the center of attention; our role is to guide and to create space for students to move forward and express themselves.”
Through openness and attentive listening, he gradually wove real-world stories and fresh perspectives into his teaching, transforming lectures into spaces of exchange and inspiration. For him, teaching was never only the transfer of knowledge but a shared journey of learning and growth—one in which even the teacher continues to evolve.

If one principle has guided him, it is this: “Always know where you stand in the larger picture.” Before entering any project or role, he asks himself: Who am I here? What can I contribute? What value will I carry away?
This, for him, is more than strategy—it is a way of living responsibly: toward oneself, toward one’s community, and toward the long arc of the future. Upon returning to the Academy, his first commitment was to give back to the institution that had shaped him. He believes that wherever one may be, each person can contribute to the common good through vision and determination.
To students still uncertain of their direction, his message is straightforward: “You don’t need everything at once. Success comes when you break a large goal into smaller, achievable steps. Learn intelligently, ground yourself in practice, and learn from real experiences. Don’t fear failure, rejection, or missed chances because you think you’re not good enough. Sometimes, those very missteps are what lead you closer to your best self.”
The story of Mr. Phạm Hải Nam is, above all, a reminder that success is not a destination but a continuous process of discovery and growth. From his tentative first steps to formative international experiences, he has built a path where personal ideals intertwine with a commitment to community and country. The journey has not been easy. It has demanded resilience, humility, and the courage to move beyond comfort zones. Yet in choosing perseverance over resignation, he has created a legacy not of fleeting brilliance but of lasting impact.
For today’s students—especially those at the Diplomatic Academy—his journey stands as both example and invitation: to venture beyond the familiar, to begin even with the smallest of steps. Every attempt, every experience, lays another stone in the lifelong construction of one’s becoming.
