The Faculty of International Law organises "Books that helped me choose law career" contest to honor Vietnam Law Day
On Friday, November 8, 2024, lecturers and students of the Faculty of International Law participated in the second “Books That Help Me Choose Law Career” writing contest, in conjunction with “Legal Bookcase and Good Books” activity.
The "Books That Helped Me Choose Law Career" writing contest is one of the Faculty of International Law's extracurricular activities in honor of Vietnamese Law Day 09/11/2024, which includes organizing an exhibition and legal books giveaway, as well as writing about books that influence students' decisions to pursue a law career. The aforementioned events have received enthusiastic participation from Faculty of International Law students in all disciplines. Many thought-provoking books were gifted to students, together with numerous passionate and articulate submissions were handed to the program's Organizing Committee.
The Faculty of International Law teachers have shortlisted 7 excellent articles to present on November 8, 2024. Candidates will have 7 minutes to discuss a legal-related book they are fond of and how it inspired their decision to pursue a law degree. The Organizing Committee does not limit the presentation format, allowing applicants room for creativity to show their presentations.
In session 1, the Organizing Committee and students heard about 4 different books: Tong Thanh Huyen with The Social Contract by Jean-Jacques Rousseau; Giang Ha Phuong with 12 Angry Men by Reginald Rose; Nguyen Phuong Uyen with Malcolm Shaw's book International Law; and Nguyen Ke Thuy Linh with Park Lee Jeong’s novel The Miracle of Cell No. 7. Subsequently, the Committee delivered comments and asked questions related to the contestants' books.
Session 2 focused on the remaining three novels in the top seven: Nguyen Ngo Thuy Duong spoke on the novel Confession by writer Minato Kanae, while La Hong Linh and Kieu Thu Chang presented Harper Lee's work To Kill a Mockingbird. The three contenders respectively answer questions from the Committee to justify their interests in the selected work.
After the two sessions, the lecturers of the Faculty of International Law discussed during the break to choose individual awards for the top 7 articles, including 1 first prize, 2 second prizes, 2 third prizes, and 2 creative awards. The first prize was awarded to Tong Thanh Huyen with a prize value of 1,200,000 VND; Giang Ha Phuong and Kieu Thu Chang shared the second prize with a prize value of 600,000 VND; Nguyen Ke Thuy Linh and Nguyen Ngo Thuy Duong shared the third prize with a prize value of 300,000 VND; Finally, La Hong Linh and Nguyen Phuong Uyen shared the creative prize with a prize value of 250,000 VND.
At the end of the contest, Miss Nguyen Thi Phuong expressed how pleased she was that the contest received an enthusiastic response from students of the Faculty of International Law. She hopes that in the future, students may continue to maintain their passion for legal reading. Mr. Pham Thanh Tung praised the entries and expressed his hope that the contest would be held annually to develop a reading culture, thereby inspiring students to continue pursuing a career in law.
